Electrician - Help with Fault Finding : (Checklist)

Most homes and offices has a stable electrical infrastructure with the main power interruption coming from the grid (Eskom) going offline. So, in general most users do not interface with the Distribution Board ,

However there are times when an appliance (faulty) is used on the electrical system and the DB "Trips". This is a good thing! (if it does not then contact us )

If you have a situation that all was ok, then the following:

  • The Main Switch (Earth Leakage) keeps going off or does not stay in the up position.
Earth Leakage
electrical Danger

Procedure

Ensure the EL Switch is reset. In the off position continue to pull down until "click" (this is on most EL switches). If the switch still trips then try the following -

  1. Switch all the circuit breakers off.
  2. Switch ON : Main Switch (In some cases the switch may be on the side of the house, so therefore it will be on)
  3. Switch ON : Earth Leakage (Big one with green handle)

The Earth Leakage should be in the UP position and stay there, this means it is supplying power to the DB.

Then -

  1. Now start to put ON each circuit breaker, one (1) at a time, wait a second or two between each one.
  2. As soon as the EL switch trips return the circuit breaker (that was lifted when it tripped) to the off position.
  3. Reset ans switch the EL switch back on, it should stay on
  4. Skip the faulty breaker/s and continue with the rest of the breakers.

At the end you should have eliminated the problem circuit/s and have power to certain parts of the building.

From the above remove the equipment that is plugged in the faulty circuit and attempt to put the circuit breaker back onto the ON position. If it remains up then you may have some faulty equipment. If it does trip the EL switch again then it is time to Contact Us

Hopefully this article does assist you but please remember 99% of the time it is better to leave it to the trained individual, this is ELECTRICITY after all.
